The last day of squirrel season for the past 5 years has become a tradition for the youth of our family and friends. This year, hunter numbers were down as other obligations had to be met for many; we even had hunters that could only do the morning or the afternoon but still wanted to be a part of it. Next year we have new recruits, so squirrels and rabbits beware. Even though the numbers were down this year the 7 hunters had a great time. The morning started with our usual squirrel/rabbit hunt. The kids had a great morning and got 6 rabbits and 1 squirrel. Noon time came around and we all gathered back at the cabin for the best chili (Michelle's) around. After lunch we gathered all the hunters and swapped out a couple of the morning hunters for the afternoon hunters. We took the short drive to Cedar Valley Hunt club in Spring Green WI.
The lodge and facilities are incredible as is the staff when it comes to there hunters especially youth. Once we arrived the kids and their mentors headed to their clay range for some practice before hitting the fields after pheasants. Once the new hunters and the older kids got used to shooting and the follow through, the clays didn't stand a chance so it was off to the fields to see how they would fair on real birds. The hunters, mentors, parents and my dog(my yellow lab Hunter) headed out for the remainder of the afternoon. I am not sure how many shotgun shell boxes were emptied but I can say the kids were not afraid to pull the trigger. The afternoon ended with a total of 6 rabbits,1 squirrel and 7 rooster pheasants. Once back to the lodge the hunters all learned how to clean and package the animals they just harvested.
The hunt was safe, new hunters were introduced out into the field, and new hunters as well as youth with a few years experience all got to enjoy the great outdoors together and possibly make new friendships and hunting bonds that will last a lifetime. It was a successful and fun day. We are now trying to add another venture for them and do a youth archery tournament early this summer.
Art & Michelle Helin have enjoyed the outdoors their entire lives. Here, they share their passion with you.
